The Institute of English at the University of Silesia, is pleased to announce the international conference ‘Interdisciplinary encounters: Dimensions of Interpreting Studies’ held on 15-16 October 2015.

Due to an increase in multiculturalism, multilingualism, immigration and globalisation as well as situations of conflict, we can observe a continuous growth of and demand for interpreting services worldwide.
Researchers, trainers and interpreters themselves have long been investigating and drawing from various disciplines in order to examine the processes and complexities of an act of interpreting, show how the discipline has evolved over time, discuss the role of an interpreter and also to meet the demands of such a dynamic profession in the modern world.
These are only some reasons why interpreting studies have profited from those interdisciplinary encounters.
The conference aims to bring together researchers, scholars, practitioners, interpreters, interpreter trainers as well as postgraduate students to share their research results, perspectives and experiences regarding the interdisciplinarity in the field of Interpreting Studies. 

We welcome papers which address the interdisciplinary character of Interpreting Studies (IS) in the following areas (but are not limited to):

          -   conference interpreting

          -   community interpreting/public service interpreting

          -   sign language interpreting

          -   IS and linguistics

          -   IS and sociology

          -   IS and psychology

          -   IS and anthropology

          -   IS and law, forensic linguistics

          -   IS and neuroscience

          -   IS and cultural studies

          -   interpreter training 

Abstracts in English (200-300 words, excluding the title and references) should be sent in either .doc, or .pdf format using 2,5 cm (1 inch) margins and a 12 pt font and should include: the author’s full name, academic title, affiliation, email address, the title of the paper and three to five key words.
Abstracts as well as any enquiries concerning the conference should be sent to:
with “IEDIS 2015”  mentioned in the e-mail title.

Papers should be 20 minutes long followed by 10-minute-discussion. The languages of the conference are English and Polish.
